When we find someone who understands us and accepts us for who we are we feel safe and happy. We look forward to spending time with them and sharing experiences together. Sometimes you can even find that you can talk for hours on end with this person and everything you find out about them is interesting and fascinating. All of a sudden we are in a relationship. However, after we get comfortable in our relationship things can begin to change. Unfortunately, sometimes the change is not for the better. Couple Counseling can help when you find yourself getting irritated and angry at the very things that you found so interesting in your partner. You no longer talk for hours on end and in fact your communication has come to a standstill. You both begin to feel disconnected and distant from each other. The friendship and intimacy you once had is gone. Conflicts happen more frequently and you feel stuck and unhappy. Whether you are together for a short time or for many years, most relationships will get strained at some time, resulting in producing self-reinforcing, maladaptive patterns. These patterns can greatly affect your relationship.
During Couple Counseling, I believe that helping couples understand their relationship in terms of patterns of behavior, communication and resolution of conflicts is key in regaining trust and intimacy. We will focus on emotion, skill building and developing new skills for enhancing your friendship and recreating intimacy with your partner. We all deserve to be in happy and fulfilling relationships.
